REFLECT: COMMUNITY

The question: How do you take care of yourself?

Our minds often jump to this idea of “self-care”, whether this is a walk outside, a day of no media, or a big ole glass of wine, we all have our own methods to resetting. Well… What about our human need to connect with others? How are you serving that need? It’s just as important in our daily care routines.

“Shouting ‘self-care’ at people who actually need “community care” is how we fail people.”

– Nakita Valerio

This week, I’ve decided to focus my attention on just that. I find that when I’m overwhelmed, I tend to retreat to my own and disconnect from others entirely. Yet, sometimes the thing that will help me the most is reconnecting with some pals. Why? It takes a village. Sometimes it’s hard (even impossible) to rise up on our own. We need others and they need us, so let’s stop underestimating the power of the people around us.

So, the next time you’re feeling stressed out — take a step back. Know the difference between when you need to take a moment simply away from the task versus a true moment by yourself. If you need a breather, maybe, just maybe, try doing something with another to recharge. Go on a coffee date, a work out class, volunteer. Affiliative behavior allows us to get outside our own head rather than just sitting at home with our bubble bath and face mask dwelling on the issue pretending it’s the last thing on our mind. Just saying! Let’s focus a little more on building up our community!

Where can you focus more on building your tribe? Any suggestions?
